Property from the Estate of Herman and Helene John, Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Condition
Framed: 33 x 37 1/4 x 4 inches.Significant deposits of surface dirt and dust; under a highly reflective and very discolored varnish; panel has a horizontal split forming, extending from the lower left edge approximately 12 inches; instances of paint separation scattered throughout; small areas of lifting paint in the boy's pant leg and in several areas of the upper left quadrant; horizontal areas of striations throughout the lower half, which appear to be applied gold paint under magnification; spots of inpainting visible within and around the dogs, visible only under raking light. Under UV light: the thick varnish prohibits clear viewing of inpainting; however, strokes of inpainting are scattered around the man's upper half; areas of inpainting scattered through the background; as well as the aforementioned areas of inpainting within and around the dogs.
